Took a walk to the park recently. Found this picture opportunity. Glad I can put it to use here. It was an old tree that had been removed. It’s time had come. New life came when someone carved a simple (yet powerful) word into the remaining trunk and planted a new tree nearby. Got me thinking. We all can cut down the old dying tree and plant new seeds in life. I plan to do so with new music and a more creative focus after a little break from all that. I guess moving to New York was also planting new seeds. We need to do what our heart tells us to be true. Do what you love! Find the soil and plant those seeds. People will like what becomes of it. Hope this makes a few people reflect and smile. -Joseph Beaty

I have always been a fan and I really enjoyed Eddie Vedder’s Ukulele record. So, I added it to my queue and pressed play. I am not sure I had any expectations about how a documentary about Pearl jam might play out. Yes it had live footage an mention of the Grunge era. What I found most enjoyable about it was how Cameron Crowe assembled the footage to portray not just a band, but a group of friends. Like minds if you will. There were many times through out the film that reminded me very much of the early days of Mindlikewater. Not that I would compare us to Pearl Jam…sound or success wise. Spending a lazy Saturday at home. Overcast winter day in the 30′s in our new home in New York. Sun is trying to peak through the clouds. However, I did feel an eerily similar vibe when they were just talking about how it all came together. It is always by chance. So and so knew this guy that introduced the other guy and so on. Anyhow, The film walked down the years and it was more a portrayal of how friends got through the other side of the maze. Really hit home for me. Mindlikewater might not be the stadium band making millions but it is none the less important to me. I don’t think a day goes by that I don’t think about something the band has done or how it might continue. Cameron Crowe did a wonderful job showing how important Pearl jam was to each member. I was peeled to the interview segments and thinking about each moment that was monumental to me with Mindlikewater. I am sure we each have different fond memories. I spoke Jim Wells on the phone the other day and he said something that stuck. “We grew up in this band man. Got out of high school, got married and moved out of our parent’s places, had kids…” Yeah we took a 4 year hiatus but I think we all needed time to realize where we were going. Once we got to a place that felt good there was this thing called, Mindlikewater that was missing. Over 10 years later I live over a days drive away form Florida and we are still working on music. We are still talking about the next time we are going to play when I visit. We still crack jokes with words like, Alfredo and white pickle. We are all the same and totally different. Which is interesting to me. I think the band name has a new meaning for me now. My mind is clear enough to think about my life and the experiences that Mindlikewater have shared as a band. We can seem to look forward to whatever is next. Moving out of state did not kill the band. It made it hungry to find a way to write and keep things moving. Cannot wait to see what is next. Thanks Cameron Crowe for making me think today.

I have been reading news reports about the #Occupy movements around the country and the rest of the world. I have been seeing local protests in my new place of residence in Glens Falls, NY shown above. I have to admit, at first I was a little put off by it. I just came from an area that is hurting so very badly in the job sector. Not that Upstate NY has not been hit. The housing market was the only thing holding up St. Lucie County, FL and it just died overnight. Leaving many without work. Mini malls everywhere are just empty shells. Graveyards of businesses that used to be. My wife and I were witnessing real crime in the form of theft and murder within walking distance to our home. It was never like that when work was present. It was time for us to leave. I certainly do not think our new town is perfect by any means. However, there is one thing that we gained by moving here. People have pride in their town. History must be preserved. Local businesses are no exception. It made me realize why these protests mean something on the smallest level. People are hitting the streets here because they want these things to thrive. It is my hope that people back in Florida are doing the same. Especially in St. Lucie County. I invested the largest part of my life trying to make a music scene happen in that area. I do believe I made a difference on some level. I hope I did. I made a point of continuing to make music and book shows so that people could continue to do something as a unit. I loved every moment of it. It was never easy as our scene would go up and down over the years. I eventually had to move on for my own reasons. It was the hardest decision I have made in my life. I always thought local there and it was time for me to start thinking outside of that box or at the very least, start thinking local in a new place. This moving experience and the recent Occupy protests have made me think deeply about how important it is to get involved again. We need to stand together on some front. Any front for that matter. Support your fellow townspeople and speak up with a simple gesture. It could be as simple as buying from a local farmer, organizing a local punk rock show or hitting the streets to voice your opinion. Feeling good about where you live is the start. No change comes from wallowing in misery. I left Florida for the sheer need for change in my heart. Now is a time for change as a whole all over the world. Amazing times we are witnessing. I think local. I contribute to where I live because it feels good inside. How are you helping your area? How are you helping the world? Let’s come together and discuss on the street and online as well.

Take care,
